Military emergency combat tourniquet, a.k.a. “CAT Tourniquet” is a small and lightweight one-handed tourniquet that completely occludes arterial blood flow in an extremity.

Wrap the CAT tightly around the leg or arm to prevent the flow of blood to the leg or the arm for a period of time. A tournament may be used when drawing blood or to stop bleeding after an injury. Tourniquets work by squeezing large blood vessels. The squeezing helps stop blood loss.

How to apply a tourniquet

For life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg and a tourniquet is available:

Wrap the tourniquet around the bleeding arm or leg about 2–3 inches (5–7.6 centimeters) above the bleeding site (Never place a tourniquet over a joint – go above the joint if necessary). Make sure the tourniquet is around a part of the limb that is between the source of bleeding and the heart.

Find the Source of the Bleeding and apply a tourniquet to bare skin or over clothing.

If someone is alert and conscious, tell them that the following step may be very painful. But that the intention is to save their limb or even their life.

REMOVE the tourniquet from the first aid kit

INSERT the wounded extremity through the loop of the self-adhering band

POSITION the tourniquet above the bleeding site, high on the extremity over the clothing/uniform.

SECURE elastic bandage tails and knots using tape, to prevent the knots from unraveling

TWIST the rod until the bleeding has stopped (complete steps 1-5 in under 1min)

LOCK the windlass rod in place with the windlass clip

ROUTE the self-adhering band around the rod and between the clips

SECURE with the windlass safety strap
